about the event:
The 2023 Citizen Science Association conference, C*Sci 2023, begins with online engagement and program offerings May 16-19. The in-person event will be held from May 22-26 on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe, Arizona (Phoenix metro area), with select streaming content available to virtual registrants.
This event convenes conversations across disciplines, roles, and perspectives. Together, we seek and share the traditional and innovative practices that lead to powerful partnerships for discovery, learning, and action. The conference will be interdisciplinary in scope, inviting abstracts for cross-cutting symposia, interactive workshops, engaging talks, and dynamic posters.
Over the past few years, the CSA Conference Team has also piloted innovative ways to convene across boundaries of space and time. The 2023 event offers us the first opportunity since 2019 to connect in person, and the program leans into the unique ways we learn from one another in a shared space.
- Posters: Open-space and organic conversations where registrants talk directly with presenters about content shared in (primarily) visual formats. In-person or virtual presentation forms.
- Symposia: a 1.5 hour (approx) cohesive session designed to elevate multiple voices and perspectives that advance a topic of value to the field.
- Discussions: Dynamic sessions to enable deep conversations around posters, to share ideas, ask questions, and build connections.
- Workshops: Hands-on, interactive, experiential, engagement-focused sessions
The strength of this field is our openness to learning across boundaries, particularly across the many approaches to research by, for, and with members of the public. Whether research partnerships are contributory, collaborative, or co-created, CSA is a place for all perspectives and the language of this event strives to reflect that.
CSA is committed to providing an equitable and inclusive virtual conference and celebrating the diverse voices in our space. CSA strives to ensure that all our members and participants feel welcome and comfortable sharing their insights and contributions with the larger citizen science community, and that all our participants can meaningfully engage in our events.
If you are interested in shaping how equity is woven into our events, please consider joining the planning team. Contact events@citizenscience.org for more information.
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions are forthcoming. In the meantime, send questions to events@citizenscience.org.
The event will take place on the Arizona State University campus in Tempe, Arizona. Located in the center of the greater Phoenix metropolitan area, Tempe is a college town with a personality all its own.

🍃 Biodiversity & Environmental Ethics – Refers to the improvement of the dynamics between humans and the myriad of species that combine to create the biosphere, which will ultimately benefit both humans and non-humans alike [UNESCO 2011 white paper on Ethics and Biodiversity]. This is a kind of ethics that is advancing rapidly in light of the current global crisis as many stakeholders know how critical biodiversity is to the human species (e.g., public health, women’s rights, social and environmental justice).
⚠ UNESCO also affirms that respect for biological diversity implies respect for societal and cultural diversity, as both elements are intimately interconnected and fundamental to global well-being and peace. (Source).
