WHY DOES CITIZEN SCIENCE MATTER?

Citizen science is revolutionizing science, leading to new discoveries and research outcomes and engaging ordinary citizens in new ways. Large-scale projects help us understand never-before-seen global trends by engaging tens of thousands of observers, while online projects invite the public to process images, dramatically accelerating the pace of research. Communities are leveraging the tools of science, or even fabricating their own tools, to confront environment problems with low-cost sensors and defensible data. With access to the scientific enterprise, participants of all ages can pool observations, hone critical thinking, create new understandings, and build the technical skills needed to help their communities thrive.
