Symposia
C*Sci2022 Symposia
This year’s symposia speakers – nominated by people across this field – will address pressing issues that many of us are struggling with as we do this work. Join in to hear generative conversations that will set us all up for the engaged and action-oriented sessions that follow.
Six Topical Symposia:
Tuesday: Equity and Inclusion in C*Sciences
Despite recognition of the overall lack of diversity among participants and practitioners, many projects struggle to connect with new communities and stakeholders. As a field that aspires to engage and reflect the knowledge of many contributors, we need to elevate the practices that include and serve more communities and that share resources and decision-making power in the process. Speakers in this topic area will provide thoughtful perspectives on their successes and challenges in integrating a range of diversity, equity, inclusion, access and justice practices into their work.
Two concurrent sessions:
What practices and structures support equity, inclusion, and diversity in c*science projects?
Host: Skye Kelty, Co-Chair of CSA’s Working Group on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI)
How can projects better share resources and decision-making power?
Host: Ted Smith, University of Louisville, Director of Center for Healthy Air, Water and Soil in UofL Envirome Institute, and CSA Board member
Wednesday: Working Across Boundaries
This field represents a wide range of disciplinary and cultural entities, and much of our work requires us to work and form partnerships across traditional boundaries. Although many of us recognize the importance of collaboration, we can sometimes struggle to effectively engage and form meaningful relationships with those who approach this work from different perspectives. Speakers in this topic area will provide thoughtful insights on their successes and challenges working across boundaries and engaging diverse groups in cohesive projects.
Two concurrent sessions:
How can we break down silos and historical barriers to engage across disciplines?
Host: Linda Silka, CSA Conference Committee Member
How can we work through different perspectives to form partnerships that address multiple priorities?
Host: Natalie Sampson, Environment Section Chair, American Public Health Association
Thursday: The Future of C*Science
Much of the work that we do requires laying a foundation well ahead of actually starting a new initiative. As we continuously work to improve our existing projects and programs, we also need to be thinking about what comes next. What big ideas and innovations will move the field forward and help us do more impactful work? Speakers in this topic area are conducting or planning cutting edge work that can challenge and change the way we think about our own practices.
Two concurrent sessions:
Where can we look for innovations in socially responsible and responsive solutions?
Host: Shannon Dosemagen, Open Environmental Data Project
How do we build sustainable projects for sustainable solutions?
Host: Jennifer Shirk, Executive Director, Citizen Science Association
